Ghana Institution of Surveyors backs government’s fight against land guards

The Ghana Institution of Surveyors (GhIS) has pledged its unflinching support to government’s efforts in getting rid of land guards in the system.

President of the GhIS, Edwin Addo-Tawiah said the influx of land guards in Ghana is a serious security issue which must be treated with caution using the appropriate approach.

Mr. Addo-Tawiah said the issues of land guards originate from lack of genuine land registration and records keeping hence his outfit is prepared to offer “voluntary services to help people survey their lands; families and individuals and be able to make a proper search in the records to facilitate their registrations”.

He also called for the prosecution of offenders by Land courts so as to deter the engagement of the services of land guards by property owners.

Surveyor Addo-Tawiah made these comments in an interview with Ghanaweb at the re-inauguration of the Women in Surveying (WinS) in Accra on November 23, 2017, in Accra.

The violent activities of land guards have forced the government to wage war on them warning land owners to disengage their services.

In the past few months, land guards have been attacking and abusing residents in communities such as Kasoa and Gomoa Feteh in the Central Region.

The residents have been living in a state of insecurity and developers have also complained of assault and extortion from land guards who consistently harass them on their lands.
