The Winneba High Court has ordered the University of Education, Winneba (UEW) branch of the University Teachers Association of Ghana (UTAG) to reorganise general elections within 21 days.
This follows an application filed by some local members on September 28, 2017. The members had contested the elections on September 15, 2017 but sought the Court’s order to allow Mampong and Kumasi campuses to take part in the general elections.
According to the application filed by contestants, the Mampong and Kumasi campuses were excluded from the voting exercise, thus disenfranchising members there. Presided over by Justice Ato Mills Graves, the Court ruled in favour of the applicants, declaring the September 15 elections null and void, ordering UTAG-UEW to reorganise the elections and give all the four campuses of UEW the opportunity to participate in the voting exercise. The court also ordered the supposedly executives to refrain from holding themselves as such until elections are held.
Dr. Stephen Antwi-Danso, who is the Vice Dean at the Faculty of Educational Studies and one of the applicants, expressed satisfaction over the ruling. The national executives of UTAG will in the interim run the affairs of UTAG-UEW until elections are done.
