“Anytime a politician is stigmatized for criminal conduct, the which hunting chorus rises from their [the pursuing government’s] political opponents,” Nana Addo stated.
The establishment of a special prosecutor’s office has seen civil society organizations and international partners warn the government to ensure that the office is not influenced by government.
Meanwhile, speaker of parliament, Professor Mike Ocquaye, has assured that government will ensure that the powers of the special prosecutor do not clash with that of the Attorney General.
The establishment of a special prosecutor’s office falls part of government’s campaign promise of ending the scourge of corruption among public officials.
Parliament passed the Office of the Special Prosecutor Bill after its third reading last week.
What this means is that the special prosecutor will have a mandate to investigate and prosecute cases of alleged corruption.
