Accra, Aug. 3, GNA – The Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) on Tuesday presented sanitation equipment valued at 35 million cedis to 40 newly employed sanitary officers to clean four areas within the Metropolis. The officers, who have been divided into four groups of 10 and code-named “Winners”, “Future Leaders”, “Simple Living”, and “Hard Rock,” are to discharge their duties in Atukpai/Bukom; London Market and Abogbloshie Number One and Abogbloshie Number Two Markets.
Presenting the items to the leaders of the groups, Nii Stanley Adjiri Blankson, Chief Executive of AMA, described the initiative as a pilot scheme to be replicated in other communities when it became successful. He said the scheme would be focused in areas where cleaning of drains required constant attention.
In an interview with the GNA on remuneration, the Mayor said there was no specified amount to be paid to the groups at the end of each month but each group would be paid according to its performance. He said the Waste Management Team of the AMA would be monitoring their activities to ensure that they were paid what they were due. Mr Adjetey Sowah, Leader of “Simple Living”, said though they had taken up the appointment they wished that the AMA could change their working locations outside where they lived. He said they would be demoralised when their friends and relatives saw them cleaning gutters.
