The Functional Executive Committee (FEC) of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) is warning members seeking to contest for various offices in the party’s impending elections to desist from any act that seeks to vilify other potential aspirants.
A statement signed by the National Chairman of the NDC, Kofi Portuphy, indicated that the executives are not pleased with the recent actions by some aspirants of the party who go publicly on air or on social media to insult other aspirants.
According to the FEC, such acts by aspirants is uncalled for as it destroys the unity of the party, therefore, call on them to desist campaigning as it has not been officially launched.
“We have observed that some potential aspirants and their followers have resorted to insults and vilification of potential contestants. This abuse takes place, at times, in a highly toxic manner on social media and sections of the media”.
“The FEC wishes to remind potential hopefuls, aspirants and their affiliates as well as all party followers that such acts constitute ‘anti-party conduct’ and at the same time destroys the cohesive unity of the party. Such conduct seriously undermines the painstaking efforts by [the] Council of Elders and the NEC to reorganize the party”.
“The FEC reminds all party faithful that the NDC’s internal electoral processes that allow members to engage in campaigns and other political activities have NOT yet been officially launched”.
This caution follows pronouncements by some leading members of the opposition party like the former Trade Minister; Ekwow Spio-Garbrah, former President John Mahama, the Second Deputy Speaker of Parliament; Alban Bagbin and other, publicly declaring their intentions to contest the flagbearership of the party.
The FEC is further advising members of the NDC to adhere to the instructions given as it is working on various programs and guidelines to ensure an even playing ground in the electoral process for successful primaries at all levels.
They are therefore encouraging members to participate in the on-going registration exercise to enable the party re-establish their solid foundation including their massive grassroots base to recapture power in the 2020 elections.
