Stop the insults, vilification of potential candidates – NDC tells members

The Functional Executive Committee (FEC) of the National Democratic Congress has warned party members to cease vilifying prospective candidates for various executive positions within the party.

A statement signed and issued Friday by the National Chairman of the party, Kofi Portuphy expressed worry about the pronouncements by some supporters of these prospective candidates on social and traditional media.

“We have observed that some potential aspirants and their followers have resorted to insults, and vilification of potential contestants. This abuse takes place, at times in a highly toxic manner on social media and sections of the media,” the statement said.

It said reminded potential hopefuls, aspirants and their affiliates that such acts constitute “anti-party conduct” which destroys the cohesive unity of the party. “Such conduct seriously undermines the painstaking efforts by Council of Elders and the NEC to reorganise the party,” it said.

The statement, which comes a day after all 10 regional chairmen endorsed former President John Mahama and requested him to consider leading the party into the 2020 elections, said the period for campaign for positions within the party have not yet been opened.

“The NDC’s internal electoral processes that allow members to engage in campaign and other political activities have NOT yet been official launched,” the statement said, adding “the party is actively working on various programmes and guidelines to ensure an equitable playing ground to enable credible electoral process towards successful primaries being held at all levels of our party”.

It has meanwhile urged members of the party to participate in the on-going registration exercise to enable the party re-establish solid foundation, including our massive grassroots base to recapture power in the 2020 elections.
