A senior lecturer at the University of Professional Studies Accra (UPSA), Brian Senyo Akrong is advocating for the need to inculcate the habit of reading in children.
Speaking on the second day of the 24th international conference of the Pan African Writers Association (PAWA) continental colloquium at the Labadi Beach Hotel on Tuesday, November 7, Mr. Akrong called for the need to generally redefine the educational system by making reading a compulsory subject in the curriculum.
According to him if education is redefined in the textbooks by making reading a priority, reading habits will improve and the demand for books will increase tremendously thereby boosting the publication of African writers.
He reiterated the benefits reading will have on children as they patronize more books indicating they will continue to read even when they close from school because they won’t see education as just getting certificates but rather as a tool to the nation’s development.
PAWA continental colloquium on the theme “Language, Library and the Book Industry” is a three-day event dedicated to the exploration and discussion of answers based on the primacy of literature and schooling, which is to say books and reading.
The programme which ends tomorrow November 8 brings together writers, librarians and language arts experts from Africa and other parts of the world.
