Parliament commended for its role the democratic process

Accra, July 28, GNA – Dr Soumana Sako, Executive Secretary of the African Capacity Building Foundation (ACBF), on Wednesday commended Ghana’s Parliament for its role in sustaining the country’s fledgling democracy.

He also commended the Speaker, Mr Peter Ala Adjetey for his exemplary leadership in raising the image of the institution of Parliament.

Dr Sako gave the commendation when he called on Mr Freddie Blay, First Deputy Speaker of Parliament at his Office in Accra. The foundation based in Harare, Zimbabwe, works in partnership with other donor organisations to support the institutional capacity building of various African Parliaments.

Dr Sako said the visit was to find ways by which the Foundation could contribute to the capacity building of Ghana’s Parliament. The Foundation does not impose any condition on a member country but rather allows it to carry out its own activities.

He said the ACBF was currently working in Nigeria, South Africa and Benin and that it would also send some of its technical advisors to Ghana soon to hold discussions on the areas of assistance.

Mr Blay thanked the Foundation for coming to the aid Parliament and said the house needed to be resourced to enhance the country’s democratic process.

He said Parliament was one of the few institutions that suffered a lot whenever there was disruption of the democratic practice.
