Women360 to alleviate maternal mortality – Dr. Antwi

The Country Director for PharmAccess, Dr. Maxwell Antwi says Woman360 will mitigate maternal mortality among pregnant women in Ghana.

Woman360 which was launched on Wednesday, October 25, is a franchise network of private clinics and hospitals operating under a recognizable brand which offers women high quality and trusted healthcare services.

According to him, about 300 pregnant women in Ghana lose their lives during child birth with an alarming 100, 000 babies dying in during their birth.

He said just 15 percent of pregnancies need the attention of doctors and specialists because they are likely to develop complications.

“85 percent of all pregnancies don’t need the attention of a doctor. It’s only 15 percent are likely to develop complications that need the attention of a doctor and a specialist” he noted.

Speaking to Journalists at the launch of Woman360, Dr. Maxwell Antwi said the network will allow the midwives to cater for the 85 percent of pregnant women who are not supposed to see the doctor.

He said the specialists and doctors will then focus their attention to the 15 percent of pregnant women who are likely to develop complications and need specialist care.

“In this way, we are able to bring care to the doorstep either at the workplace or close to the place of residence of pregnant women” he highlighted.

Netherlands Ambassador to Ghana, Ron Strikker noted that the Embassy of the Kingdom of the Netherlands will hopefully provide hundreds of ‘Spokes’ across the country to help reduce maternal and infant mortality in coming years.

The Woman360 network uses effective standardization of care processes, networked information system, strong monitoring and organised referral systems to operate serval units of Midwife-managed antenatal clinics known as ‘Spokes’ to serve rapid antenatal care units and refer their clients with emergency or identified risk to an obstetrician for immediate attention at the Hubs.

The Hubs are adequately resourced and complete hospitals where clients are received from the Spokes. It also serves as centres for child delivery for all expectant mothers.
