Three arrested over abortion

Accra, July 23, GNA – Three persons have been arrested following the death of a 32-year-old mother of five after an alleged illegal abortion.

They are John Ave, husband of the deceased, Beatrice Kesseh, a seamstress and Dr Alimiyao Adam of Alimi Clinic at Madina.

Chief Superintendent Felix Fiati, Nima Divisional Commander, told the Ghana News Agency on Friday that the deceased, Lilian Apati, was rushed to the 37 Military Hospital on July 3 after complaining of abdominal pains. However, she was pronounced dead on arrival. He said after post-mortem examination at the Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital it was discovered that she died after an illegal abortion.

Mr Fiati said preliminary Police investigations found that Ave decided together with Lilian, whose last child was only two years old, to terminate the pregnancy and gave her 400,000 cedis to abort the pregnancy.

He said Lilian contacted Beatrice, her friend, who in turn introduced her to Dr Adam, who performed the illegal abortion, which eventually led to the death of Lilian. 23 July 04
