Help create jobs – Ghanaians abroad told

Sunyani (Brong Ahafo), 18 Nov. 1998 – Mr David Osei-Wusu, out-going Brong Ahafo Regional Minister, has called on Ghanaians abroad, including those on the Ghanaian forum on the internet – okyeame, to help create jobs in Ghana for the youth.

He said they can bring home small and medium size industrial plants to boost the country’s industrialisation instead of their present preference for flashy cars and other personal effects which do not benefit the whole society.

Speaking at a meeting in Sunyani yesterday with students and staff of the Ghana Armed Forces Command Staff College, who are on a study tour of the region, he said it is now time for Ghanaians abroad to use their hard earned wealth to acquire simple industrial plants to create more wealth in the country if their people are to derive long-term and sustainable benefits from their stay outside.

Mr Osei-Wusu, who is now Central Regional Minister designate, expressed concern about the concentration of factories in Accra, Tema and other few coastal cities and said unless the practice is stopped, the country’s rural urban-migration would worsen with dire social consequences.

He appealed to investors to take advantage of the cheap labour, and land and extend development projects to the region.

The military officers, led by Lt Col. Charles Mankatah, asked questions pertaining to security, political, economic and land tenure problems in the region especially in the wake of the reported violence at Fiapre following the acquisition of a piece of land for a Catholic University.
