Wildlife Society organises biodiversity awareness campaign

Nkawie (Ash), July 17, GNA- This year’s biodiversity awareness creation campaign in the Atwima district has been launched at Nkawie with a call on district assemblies to save the over-exploitation of forest resources.

A resolution presented to the Atwima District Assembly after a route march through the principal streets of Toase and Nkawie on Friday by wildlife clubs from nine educational institutions in the area, the students were not happy that loggers, especially chainsaw operators were operating in the forest reserves.

The Ghana Wildlife Society in collaboration with the Forestry Commission (FC) organised the campaign, under the theme: “Biodiversity Conservation And Our survival”.

The resolution said the threat to the already limited forest resources did not only threaten resident species, but also resulted in drastic changes in climatic conditions while water bodies dry up or were polluted.

“These illegal harvesting of our forest resources especially by chainsaw operators end up causing landslides with serious damage anytime it rained because the hilly places have been cleared of forest cover”, the resolution added.

Alhaji Yakubu Ziblim, the Atwima District Co-ordinating Director who received the resolution on behalf of the assembly, asked the older generation to feel ashamed for looking on unconcerned for persons to destroy the eco-system.

He commended the students for their concern shown towards the depleting of the environment and said the district assembly would support and encourage individuals to replenish the destroyed areas.
