Doctor Fired For Refusing Transfer

Mr. Moses Dani Baah, Deputy Minister for Health has explained why a Senior Medical Officer was dismissed by the Ghana Health Service (GHS) Council in August last year.

According to him, Dr Francis Banka, Upper West Regional Director of Health, was dismissed for failing to accept a transfer to Ho, the Volta Region capital.

A reader?s letter to the paper on the subject alleged that Dr Banka?s dismissal was arbitrary.

Explaining the issue, the Deputy Minister said his Ministry began implementing in August 2001 a policy of transferring to different regions all Regional Directors of Health who had been at their current post for more than five years.

Mr Dani Baah said that the Regional Directors concerned were given the option of proposing where they wished to be posted. He said that all the other Directors complied with the directive, except Dr. Banka who insisted on remaining in the Upper West Region.
