President of the Ghana Independent Broadcasters Association (GIBA), Andrew Danso Anninkora, has revealed that the body will be holding a crunch meeting today, Monday, October 2 over the sanctions meted out to the 131 radio stations by the National Communications Authority (NCA).
The NCA revoked the authorisation of some broadcasting stations while others were fined for committing various infractions pertaining to their authorisations to operate as contained in Section 13 of the Electronics Communications Act (2009), Act 775.
In all, the NCA is owed GH¢1,223,790,000 by some 76 commercial and community radio stations across the country. To this end, the NCA has revoked the license of some stations while others have been fined.
GIBA last week described the sanction as “harsh”.
Speaking in an interview with Chief Jerry Forson on the Ghana Yensom show on Accra 100.5FM on Monday, October 2, Mr Anninkora said: “GIBA will be meeting today with the Council of Elders over sanctions to determine the way forward. GIBA is certainly not happy with the development.
“We have already started speaking with some of the members who have been sanctioned and look into their documents. Yes, some owe and so we will look at the situation when we meet today.”
He further cautioned members of GIBA to comply with the laws governing the sector.
He said: “There are laid down procedures and rules that we must all comply, and so it is not just enough to establish a radio station and leave it as such, all the stations must comply with the regulations”.
