A soldier killed over duck at Coaltar

Coaltar (Eastern Region) 28 Oct.’98

The Police have arrested one Kwesi Afriyie Darko, 34, and his uncle, Kwame Bamfo, 65, both farmers at Coaltar in the Eastern Region, for their alleged involvement in the killing of Private Nii Addey Acheampong, of the Recce Regiment of the Ghana Armed Forces. Private Addey, 24, was said to have been shot at close range in the left rib and fell down unconscious. He was rushed to the Nsawam Government Hospital on Sunday, October four, this year and later transferred to the 37 Military Hospital where he died on Tuesday, October seven. District Superintendent of Police W.B. Baiden of Nsawam who confirmed this, said they are still investigating. The deceased’s mother, Nana Acheampong who is a fetish priest at Coaltar, told GRi that on the day that private Addey was shot, he had approached Bamfo to collect his ducks but he refused to give them to him explaining that the ducks were given to his son who was out of town. Nana Acheampong said, Addey gave the ducks to Ahwireng about nine months ago, but had not been given his share of the ducks produce according to their agreement. Hence, there was a misunderstanding between Bamfo and Addey which resulted in a fight. It was just after the fight that Addey was shot by the suspect.
