Court remands suspected bank robber

Sunyani, June 5, GNA – The Sunyani Magistrate Court on Monday remanded Kofi Oti, a 21-year-old mason into prison custody for attempting to rob a Rural bank at Abesim, near Sunyani.

Oti’s plea was not taken on three counts of conspiracy to commit crime, unlawful entry and stealing. He will reappear on July 20. Deputy Superintendent of Police Alex Yartey Tawiah, prosecuting, told the Court, presided over by Mr Charles Adjei Wilson, that on July 30, this year, at about 0340 hours, Oti and others broke into the bank to steal.

While ransacking the Bank’s offices, police had a tip off and rushed to the scene but Oti and the others escaped leaving one of them, Kofi James, inside the bank.

DSP Tawiah said in a bid to escape arrest, James, now deceased, jumped out from the roofing in a bid to escape.

He said the police ordered him to stop but he defied the order, so they shot him on the leg and arrested him.

Kofi James was sent to the Sunyani government hospital but he died the following day, the Court heard.

The prosecutor said before he died, James mentioned Oti as one of his accomplices.
