Council Of Elders for Upper East advocated

Bolgatanga, July 5, GNA – The Upper East Regional Minister, Mr Mahami Salifu, has suggested the need for a Council of Elders for the Region.

He said such a body should comprise senior citizens with vast experience in private and public life.

Mr Salifu said the body should be tasked to advice the Regional Coordinating Council on how to promote good governance and improve the standards of living of the people.

Mr Salifu made the suggestion during a reception organized by the Regional Co-ordinating Council (RCC) in Bolgatanga for Senior Citizens in commemoration of Ghana’s 44th Republic Day.

The Minister noted that the Senior Citizens had wide-range of experiences and knowledge that should be utilised for the benefit of the society.

Mr Salifu said Government recognizes their immense contributions to national development, adding: ” A country that frowns at it elders and does not honour and respect them is destined to fail”.

He said although much has not been done to honour senior citizens for their contributions, Government appreciates their role and would ensure that they receive the necessary attention. Mr Salifu said the implementation of a humane policy could assist in lessening the hardships when they retire from public life. He appealed to them to soberly reflect on national events to enable them effectively contribute to the development agenda. The Senior Citizens unanimously thanked Government for appreciating their contributions to national development and pledged to continue to be patriotic. 05 July 04
