Our demonstrations had impact on 2016 election – LMVCA

The Director of Operations for Let My Vote Count Alliance (LMVCA), John H. Acquaah says the demonstrations they had two years ago to protest the credibility of the 2016 voters register had impact on 2016 general elections yielding positive results.

According to him, their demonstrations got Ghanaians educated and aware of the electoral processes of the country by understanding issues of the proxy system, collations sheets and so on.

“With our demonstration and with our activities since 2015 till now, it has really given us the opportunity or has created the awareness for Ghanaians to know the electoral process to understand issues of proxy for Ghanaians to understand the processes, issues of collation sheets, the results being pasted at the polling stations. I think all these things culminated in the fact that we had a very successful election”, he said.

He further reiterated that their demonstration over the years resulted to the various political parties being vigilant during the 2016 elections thereby resulting in the parties accepting the outcome of the results the Electoral Commission presented.

He attributed their demonstration to be the cause of having a credible and transparent 2016 election because of the awareness they created.

The pressure group over the weekend September 16 marked its 2nd anniversary of a demo which turned violent in 2015 when some of the protesters supposedly veered off the prescribed route.

Last year, they marked their one-year anniversary with a rally at the Okaishie Drug Lane in Accra but same didn’t happen for this year because according to him they are not in a political season.
