Accra, July, GNA – Mr Albert Kan-Dapaah, Minister of Communication and Technology, on Monday called on member states of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) in Africa to established the necessary protection and safety infrastructures to regulate activities that could lead to radiation exposure.
He said this would help to protect the population and the environment from any hazards that could result from the misuse of radiation.
Mr Kan-Dapaah was addressing a five-day international workshop for selected English Speaking African Countries on the control of radiation organised by the Radiation Protection Institute (RPI) of the Ghana Atomic Energy and sponsored by the International Atomic Energy Agency. The Workshop is expected to upgrade the knowledge of the 26 participants to facilitate in the legislation and administration of a national regulatory system on radiation in their respective countries. Issues to be deliberated on at the workshop include the code of conduct on the safety and security of radioactive sources and the categorisation and the security of radioactive sources.
Mr Dapaah asked the participants to collaborate in their activities to enable them to come out with products that would help to improve their societies.
Professor, Edward Horga Kordza Akaho, Director General of the Ghana Atomic Energy, thanked the IAEA for sponsoring the workshop. The participating countries are Ghana, Botswana, Egypt, Kenya, Namibia, Sierra Leone, Sudan, Tanzania and Zimbabwe. 05 July 04
