It will be difficult for Bawumia to become NPP flagbearer – Political Scientist

A Political Science Lecturer at the University of Ghana Legon, Dr. Isaac Owusu Mensah has revealed that it would be difficult for the vice president of the republic Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia to become the flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party if the president refuses to contest as the flagbearer of the party in future.

Speaking on Happy FM’s current affairs show Epa Hoa Daben, Dr. Owusu Mensah said the New Patriotic Party has highly competent men and women who have contested and can still contest the position and added that many of such persons have in the past even contested the sitting president Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo himself.

Dr. Isaac Owusu Mensah spoke against the backdrop that Nana Addo Dankwa Akuffo Addo might not be able to resurface to contest the flagbearership position due to a health, challenge he’s currently battling with as revealed by the Economic Intelligence Unit (EIU).

“The NPP has highly capable men to run for the flagbearer position should Nana Addo not run for the president in the next elections. Some of these people have contested Nana Addo himself before. It will, however, be extremely difficult for Dr. Bawumia to get the flagbearer nod,” he said.

He was quick to advise the party to give the opportunity to Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia to contest the position if the president refuses to run for re-election.

According to him, this will help erase the thought that the New Patriotic Party is an ‘Akan based’ party and disliked people of the Northern part of Ghana.

“Leadership has nothing to do with age he said if Nana has the zeal to go again and has a good team to help him govern he doesn’t see why he should relent on going again,” he added
