Nkawkaw, June 21, GNA – The Nkawkaw High Court, presided over by Mr Justice Kwaku Adu-Gyamfi, has remanded armed robbers in police custody for attacking and robbing Mr Safo Gyamfi, a former Kumasi Asante Kotoko player of huge sums of money both in local and foreign currencies and some personal effects.
The suspects, whose pleas were not taken, were to re-appear before the court on June 27.
The suspects put in prison custody were Samuel Okai, alias Kwame Sammy, a 25-year-old trader, Maxwell Okai, alias Abubakari Okai, alias “Damage”, 22, trader and Kwasi Paul, alias Awudu Mustapha or Prodo, a 27-year-old trader.
Others were Kwasi Osei, 38, porter, Enoch Ofosu, 37 and Yaw Appiah, 28, while Kofi Joe, alias Odjo and Kwabena Ayisi, alias Azee, were both on the run.
Prosecuting, Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Christopher Klomegah told the court that on June 1, this year, the complainant, who is a Kumasi-based businessman, drove from Accra in his Mitsubishi pick-up towards Kumasi.
He said on reaching Nkawkaw at about 0130 hours, he decided to take a rest with two other companions but while resting, Samuel, Maxwell, Paul and the two others now at large, attacked them with a locally manufactured pistol, cutlass and clubs.
The gang, he said, had just before then attacked an articulator driver, Daniel Kudoadzi, at the outskirts of Nkawkaw and robbed him of 4.3 million cedis.
The prosecutor said the robbers who continued with their operations to the centre of the town, inflicted wounds on the head and left leg of Mr Gyamfi and snatched his travelling bag containing 32,000 euros, 10,000 dollars, 15 million cedis, a Siemens mobile phone and some personal effects and fled.
ASP Klomegah said the gang went and shared their booty and left for Accra but were arrested by a combine military and police patrol team on June 8, in Accra following a tip-off.
