Government urged to establish fund for elections

Accra, June 21, GNA – Mrs Leonoria Kyeremateng of the Democratic Governance has suggested that government should set aside an election fund to enable the country fund its own elections rather than relying on donor support.

She said the Government could do this by putting aside some funds on a yearly basis.

“From the next elections the country should be able to totally fund its elections by putting aside some funds yearly,” she explained. Mrs Kyeremateng was making a contribution at the 17th Speaker’s Breakfast Forum in Accra on Monday. The topic for discussion was: “The 1992 Constitution of Ghana: The Case for its Review.”

She called for resources for Parliamentarians to enable them to effectively discharge their duties.

Mr Peter Ala Adjetey, Speaker of Parliament; Professor Alexander Kwapong, Chairman of the Council of State; the Leadership and Members of Parliament participated.

Mr Samuel Darkwa, Former Clerk of Parliament, in his submissions, said creating of second Chamber of Parliament was not necessary since the Council of State had influence on the Executive. Mr John Amediga, General Secretary of the Great Consolidated peoples Party (GCPP), said the public’s perception that the Government influenced the activities of the Electoral Commission would be erased if an independent body did the appointment of the Electoral Commissioner.
