Veep assures Sierra Leone of Ghana’s support

Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia has presented relief items worth $1million dollars to the government of Sierra Leone to aid in their recovery process following a mudslide disaster that has left over 400 dead and about 600 missing in the capital, Freetown.

The items comprised food, medicines, clothing and logistics for temporary shelter.

Dr. Bawumia handed the relief items to Sierra Leonean President, Ernest Bai Koroma, and assured Sierra Leone of Ghana’s support.

Officials of Ghana’s National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) were also on the ground to provide assistance and train Sierra Leonean officials on disaster management.

About 3,000 people are homeless in what is being described as a humanitarian emergency.

There is also growing concern about the risk to public health from water-borne diseases.

Meanwhile, former President John Dramani Mahama has also added his voice to calls on the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) and other neighbouring countries to support that country’s recovery process.
