Kumasi, June 12, GNA – The Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly (KMA) has sourced 480 million cedis from the HIPC Fund for the provision of water closet toilets for basic schools and four communities in the metropolis. The project formed part of efforts by the KMA to improve upon environmental hygiene in the metropolis and the beneficiary schools and communities are the Chirapatre Roman Catholic primary and Asokwa Presbyterian primary schools, Atonsu, Ahinsan, Gyinase and Atonsu-Agogo.
Mr Maxwell Kofi Jumah, the Metropolitan Chief Executive, made this known on Thursday when he visited the schools and communities to see at first hand preparations being made for work on the projects to start. He said the KMA was concerned with environmental cleanliness that was why it was embarking on the provision of water closet toilets and therefore, urged the beneficiaries to ensure the proper management of the facilities.
Mr Jumah said: ” Keeping our environment clean is the responsibility of every citizen” and appealed to people in the metropolis to assist the KMA in keeping Kumasi and its environs clean. Miss Beatrice Owusu Adjei, Headmistress of Chirapatre R/C primary school, expressed appreciation to the KMA for selecting the school for the project.
She said the present KVIP toilet built in 1960 posed a health hazard to the people and was also a death trap due to its deterioration. 12 June 04
