NDC group defends Rawlings against Saywerr

A pro-National Democratic Congress (NDC) pressure group, Action Movement for NDC, has said concerns raised by former President Jerry John Rawlings with regards to corruption in the previous Kufuor, Mills and Mahama administrations are genuine and thus must not be attacked.

According to the group’s spokesperson Kwadwo Hamenya Keglo, there were several corrupt practices that characterised the John Mahama administration, and, so, the NDC should take the criticisms of Mr Rawlings seriously.

His comments follow a scathing attack launched at the founder of the NDC by former Deputy Chief of Staff in the Mahama administration, Valerie Sawyerr.

Ms Sawyerr accused Mr Rawlings of portraying himself as a saint even though he is not unblemished.

In a response to a recent comment by Mr Rawlings that former Presidents John Kufuor, John Mills and John Mahama were all corrupt, Ms Sawyerr wondered whether Mr Rawlings is the only saint of a president that Ghana has had.

But reacting to Ms Sawyerr’s comments in an interview with Accra News on Tuesday August 8, Mr Keglo said: “The level of corruption that happened in JM’s administration was too much. That was the reason why corruption was tagged as one of the main reasons why we lost the 2016 elections.”

“Projects were inflated and people were talking about it and the NPP was able to, at least, use one example which was the bus branding project and when this country went into the bus branding project, it was realised that it was inflated.

“Nobody should contest what the founder is saying about the NDC because they are the truths. We are just about seven months out of power and we can’t even pay utility bills for our party.”
