Police arrest driver of cement truck which killed two in Kumasi

The driver of a parked truck which took off down the hill killing two on the spot at the racecourse in Kumasi has been picked up by the Suame Police command in the Ashanti region.

The DAF truck carrying cement suddenly moved plummeting down and knocking into other stores and any person in sight on Monday dawn.

It took the bravery of an on-looking driver to jump onto the truck and steer it to safety to prevent further destruction and loss of lives.

Two persons, a trader and a female student of the St Louis College of Education were reportedly killed on the spot with some five others seriously injured.

A horrified trader who narrated the incident to Ultimate News recounted that “the car was parked at the top of the hill with no driver in it. All of a sudden it took off and one driver who was sitting around ran to steer it into the bushes. It dragged off a woman who sells her wares beside the road.

“A student of St Louis who had just been offered admission was also standing by the mobile money vendor waiting for some money she was cashing to go pay her fees and she was also killed,” She narrated.

The assembly member of the Krobo Odumasi electoral area where the incident happened Alexander Sarfo Kesse told Ultimate News, “Had it not been for the Good Samaritan who got in the truck and steered it to safety, the incident would have been tragic”

He, however, confirmed that the bodies of the two had been deposited at the mortuary while the injured were receiving treatment at the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital.

Some women, however, expressed strong suspicions that the death toll could be higher than the two which had been officially communicated.
