Interpol intercepts stolen cars from Germany

Accra, May 28, GNA – Interpol, Accra has smashed an attempt by a syndicate based in Germany and Accra, involving Ghanaians and Germans, to ship stolen luxury cars from Europe to Ghana.

Nine of such cars are to be shipped back to Germany from where they were stolen at the expense of Interpol Germany.

Mr Prosper Ablor, Head of Interpol Accra, told the Ghana News Agency that his outfit with the collaboration of the Customs, Excise and Preventive Service (CEPS) intercepted the cars shipped from Germany in March this year.

He said the cars were intercepted following a tip-off from the International Association of Auto Theft Investigation in London that a vessel, MSC IPANEMA, which docked at the Tema Harbour on March 18, was carried stolen cars in three containers.

Mr Ablor, who is also a Chief Superintendent of Police, said seven of the cars were listed on the Interpol International Database as stolen vehicles.

The cars stolen from Germany, included Mercedes Benz 4 x4 ML270; Mercedes Benz Saloon, two BMW 530 saloon cars all stolen from Germany on March 4, The others are a Mercedes Benz C220 CDI that was stolen on February 18 and VW Golf E220 CDI that was stolen on February 23.

Mr Ablor said two other cars a BMW X5 4 x4 and BMW 5 series, 2004 model also stolen from Germany were earlier seized by the Police and would be shipped together with the seven others to Germany.

Mr Ablor warned the public to desist from buying such luxurious cars without proper documentation since it was an offence to buy stolen items either knowingly or unknowingly.
