Madam Charlotte Osei, others must step aside – Former EC Director

Kwame Damoah Agyemang, a Former Administrator at the Electoral Commission (EC) is advocating that the Chairperson of the Commission, Madam Charlotte Osei and her two deputies must immediately step aside to allow peace reign in the commission and for investigations to be carried out.

The former Director, who is worried the current wrangling is making the commission lose its credibility in the eyes of the Ghanaian public, wants the allegations leveled against each other thoroughly investigated and those found culpable dealt with.

“My appeal to the President and the Chief Justice is to speed up investigations and haul anyone culpable from the Commission before court”, the former Director appealed.

According to him, it is in the interest of both parties to step aside and allow for proper investigations in order to enable them clear their bruised images in the raging image-smearing allegations that have rocked the Commission for almost a week now.

Whereas he disclosed that the current power struggle will affect the work commission, he indicated that government will suffer the major repercussions in view of the fact that it may affect the creation of the new regions and districts as promised.

“Our laws say after every presidential and parliamentary poll, we should have district assembly elections. Government now also plans to create other districts and regions. By now they should be working towards it but what is happening will not be a good thing for them to plan towards that”, Mr. Aggyemang Damoah bemoaned.

He observed that mistrust has set in at the commission expressing doubts if it will ever be able to discharge its duties effectively as enshrined in the Constitution.

“The mistrust between the chairperson and her two deputies will make it impossible for the Commission to work as a team in coming elections”, he stated.
