Daily Graphic

“Stealing of luxury cars from Canada…4-man racket busted”, is the lead headline of the Graphic. The paper reports that a rare collaborative effort of Ghanaian and Canadian security agents have led to the arrest of three persons believed to be members of a trans-continental syndicate involved in stealing and shipping luxury cars to Ghana under false documentation. The three who are on police inquiry bail are: Philip Opoku (alias Alhaji) and Ofori, both clearing agents and Sammy Antwi, an importer, while the fourth suspect, Nelson Adu Antwi, is on the run. GRI

In another front page story headlined: “Nigeria media incite public against Annan”, the Graphic says after the hullabaloo over the cause of the death of Chief Moshood Abiola which sparked off violent incidents resulting in fatalities, a section of the Nigerian media is now inciting public anger against UN Secretary-General, Mr Kofi Annan. The paper says so unrestrained has been the anti-Annan campaign that one of the newspapers carried a banner headline in which it said some student activists have even gone to the extent of giving Ghanaian residents in Nigeria a 30-day ultimatum to leave the country, particularly, Lagos or face the consequence. It says investigations however show that the address and location of the newspaper, “Prime Sunset” are not known and the newspaper has since that edition, not appeared on the news-stand. Some other Nigerian newspapers, according to the Graphic, described Mr Annan as dishonest for telling the world that Chief Abiola had agreed to renounce his 1993 mandate which saw him declaring himself as President in 1994 and for which act he was detained.
