Two convicts fight in court; prison officer fires shots to separate them

It was chaos at the Tema High Court on Monday as two convicts nearly came to blows, but for the intervention of the prison officer on duty. The judge convicted two men, however, the pair decided to take matters into their own hands after the court proceedings.

According to reports, one of the convicts incriminated the other in his evidence statement, leading to a brawl outside the court room.

It had to take the intervention of the prison officer on duty to stop both convicts from engaging themselves further. After failing to separate both men despite persuasion from the watching public, the security officer was left with no choice than to fire warning shots. His action, though very bizarre, managed to separate the two convicts.

But explaining further what happened in court, director of public affairs, Vitalis Ayeh said it was not difficult for them to leap over the little cage that served as the dock and when they did, they attacked their colleague. “You can’t handcuff a suspect in court. It is against the law” he said. Meanwhile, the ensuing brawl attracted a crowd to the court.
