Abetifi, May 18, GNA – Students of the Abetifi Presbyterian Training College (ABETICO) are constructing a 475-million-cedi computer laboratory for the college with contributions from their monthly allowances.
The laboratory, which would consist of a hall and offices, is being financed from contributions of 16,000 cedis each by the 188 first-year students, 25,000 cedis each by 120 second-year students, while the 240 third-year students are contributing 30,000 cedis each towards the projects.
Mr Isaiah Katakyi, President, Students’ Representative Council (SRC) of the college said this at a sod cutting and fund raising ceremony to mark the college’s SRC Week.
He said the objective of the project was to supplement the government’s efforts to introduce Information Communication and Technology programmes in all the training colleges.
Mr Katakyi appealed to all old students, NGO’s, the well-to-do Kwahu citizens and philanthropists to channel their financial contributions through accounts numbers AS 06 1351 and 10206 at the Odwen Anoma Rural Bank and the Ghana Commercial Bank (GCB) at Abetifi and Mpraeso branches, respectively, to supplement the students’ efforts at completing the project.
He said the SRC had constructed a students’ Common Hall, purchased a corn-mill, a gas oven and 200 plastic chairs for the college over the past five years and urged the students to pay their contributions regularly to ensure early completion of the laboratory.
The Principal of the college, Rev. Fred Appertey, commended the SRC for initiating the project to supplement the Teacher Education Division of the Ghana Education Service programme to upgrade all training colleges in the country to diploma awards institutions by next academic year, whereby computer literacy training is an essential subject. He appealed to the GETFund for financial and material assistance towards the upgrading of the training colleges to diploma awarding institutions.
Rev. Appertey said though the upgrading programme is to take off in October, this year, facilities at the colleges have not been upgraded. Over three million cedis was realised in an appeal for funds to finance the projects.
