Rainstorm destroys Aboso Methodist School

Aboso (W/R), May 17, GNA – The Aboso Methodist Junior Secondary School (JSS) in the Wassa West district has been closed down, following a rainstorm that hit the town over the weekend, severely damaging a block of 11 classrooms whose roofs were also ripped off.

Mr Kwaku Adjei Nuako, Headteacher of the school told the Ghana News Agency at Aboso on Friday that more than 200 students have been affected and that the authorities were providing alternative classrooms to ensure that academic work is not disrupted for a long period.

Damage to the school and some private properties runs into several millions of cedis.

Mr Nuako said the school, which was constructed in 1925 by Methodist Missionaries, had not seen any renovation, rendering the whole structure weak.

He said although he had written several letters to the Wassa West District Assembly, the District Directorate of Education, and the Member of Parliament for Prestea-Huni Valley constituency for help to renovate the school block, it was only the Methodist Church that responded and donated 1.250 million cedis.

The headteacher therefore called on non-governmental organisations, benevolent organisations, mining companies, individuals and old students the school to assist it.

Mr Benjamin Asabil, Presiding Member of the district assembly, said a contract for the construction of a block of three classrooms would be awarded soon.
