UK education is meaningless unless it contributes to national dev’t – Owusu-Ankomah

Ghana’s High Commissioner to the United Kingdom, Papa Owusu-Ankomah, has advised Ghanaian Chevening scholars to endeavour to make a difference when they return home after studying in the United Kingdom.

He said, as Chevening scholars, your UK education will be meaningless unless it contributes to national development adding that Chevening scholars are trained to think and compete globally to develop their nations.

He, therefore, charged the Ghanaian Chevening scholars to apply the skills and knowledge acquired in the UK to support the Ghana government’s agenda of moving beyond aid.

The High Commissioner said these when he hosted the 2016/17 batch of Ghanaian Chevening Scholars at the Ghana High Commission in the UK.

The Chevening Scholarship is the UK government’s international awards scheme aimed at developing global leaders. It offers a unique opportunity for future leaders, influencers, and decision-makers from all over the world to develop professionally and academically, network extensively, experience UK culture, and build lasting positive relationships with the UK.

In 2016, 22 young Ghanaians were awarded Chevening scholarship to study for master’s degrees in various universities across the UK. They form part of a global team of 1,900 beneficiaries of the scholarship from 140 countries.

“It is a privilege to have a UK education. Search yourself and see what you can do to contribute to national development,” Mr. Owusu-Akomah said.

He emphasised that as part of his plans as High Commissioner, he intends to engage Ghanaian students in the UK and encourage them to go back home to use the skills acquired to help develop Ghana.

The Ghanaian scholars expressed gratitude to the High Commissioner for hosting them and highlighted their individual plans to help develop Ghana when they return home.
