Ghanaian journalists must learn to specialise in specific areas of reportage – Ken Mornah

Publisher and Managing Editor of the New Maritime and Transport Digest, Kennedy Mornah has called for the change in paradigm of journalism in the country.

Mr. Mornah who won the reporter of the year at the maiden edition of the Ghana Shippers Award noted that journalism pattern in the country currently was not the best given that journalists want to be ‘jack of all trades and masters of none’. He decried the practice whereby journalists reported on virtually all the sectors is not a good culture.

“What I want to say is that we should start specialising; let’s look for the areas and specialise in them so that when we report we’ll report accurately, we can report properly, we can report what we’re supposed to be reporting and not just hopping from one place to the other doing all the stories that we think we can lay our hands on or we can lay our eyes on”, he said.

The Shipping/maritime industry journalist also urged more reporters to divert to the sector indicating that there was a dearth of journalists in the area. “The Shipping industry is still grossly underreported. We have very little number of journalists reporting in this particular industry… I think that if we have many more of our caliber in this industry, we’ll take it to higher heights. We need to still get a lot more people in the maritime industry reporting”.

Kennedy Mornah was speaking after receiving the award of the Best Reporter of the year. He beat representatives from Daily Graphic, TV3, Radio Gold and the Business and Financial Times to win it.

The Ghana Shippers Awards ceremony was held at the Movenpick Hotel in Accra to reward those that have played a defining role in moving the industry forward and have demonstrated achievements across a wide variety of domains including sustainability, operational excellence, innovation and others.

Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of GCNet, Dr Nortey Omaboe won the overall CEO of the year whereas Dr. Daniel McKorley of McDan Shippers Ltd won the Entrepreneur of the year.
