The budgetary allocation to the National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE) has been increased by ‘more than double’, Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia says.
The Vice President who spoke at the at 2017 NCCE National Dialogue held at the National Theatre in Accra said his government recognises the daunting task of the NCCE, adding that a separate amount has been provided for the NCCE’s capital expenditures.
Dr. Bawumia also charged the NCCE to lead the charge of restoring Ghanaian values that will foster the national development.
Meanwhile Chairman of the NCCE, Josephine Nkrumah who expressed gratitude for the increment in the commission’s budgetary allocation noted that a lot more remains to be done in civic education.
“We acknowledge with gratitude the increment in our 2017 budget. However, a lot more remains to be done in tackling the urgency for the NCCE to be properly resourced and retooled to better deliver on its mandate”.
Mrs. Nkrumah also charged government as a matter of urgency to re-introduce civic education as an examinable subject in Ghana’s education curricula, adding that corporate bodies should collaborate with the commission on matters of civic awareness.
The National Dialogue organised under the theme “Restoring the Ghanaian Identity; Our Values, Our Passion” had the personalities such as Mr. S.K. Asante, Justice V. C. R. A. C. Crabbe, Prof. Steven Addei and Prof Ama Ata Aidoo arrayed for a panel discussion on how to restore Ghanaian values.
The dialogue chaired by the Nana Kobina Nketsia V, Omanhene of the Essikado traditional area was organised to commemorate 25 years of the Fourth Republican Constitution.
