The Minority in Parliament has lamented government’s decision to reduce allocation to the Ghana Education Trust Fund (GETFund) by 21 per cent.
As such, the MPs claim government’s Free Senior High School promise hangs in the balance.
Government has reduced from GHS1billion to GHS790 million allocations to the GETFund.
Speaking on the floor of parliament on Tuesday June 13, 2017, James Avedzi Klutse, said: “This year, it is only GHS790,224,149 that is allocated to the GETFund, a reduction of almost 21 per cent. I think that Mr Speaker, this is going to affect the education sector in terms of provision of infrastructure for all the educational sectors: that is basic, secondary and tertiary.
“Mr. Speaker, we want to urge the Minister of Finance to ensure that once the amount allocated to the sector is less than what is supposed to be, we should not come here next time and be talking about non-release of the fund to the GETFund. We want the Minister to release the fund on time to the GETFund administrator in order for the Ministry and the GETFund to provide the schools with all the resources needed.”
