Pigs invade Tunsuom

Residents of Tunsuom at Jamasi in the Sekyere South district of the Ashanti Region say they are battling with the invasion of stray pigs in their homes and kitchens.

The stray animals are said to be invading homes and kitchens of residents after frolicking through public toilets and refuse dumpsites. They destroy foodstuffs of residents whose homes they invade in search of food when they are absent.

The situation, according to the worried residents, has persisted for over two years and is yet to receive the needed attention by authorities after several concerns were raised.

Residents said they fear the risk of contracting strange and contaminated diseases if the issue is not addressed.

Speaking to Class News’ regional correspondent, Hafiz Tijani, the assembly member for the Tunsuom electoral area, Habila Yakub, said: “The community has been invaded by pigs and as we speak you can count not less than 50 pigs straying in the community. Because it’s raining these pigs will go into our public toilets, sleep there, and from there they will come to people’s houses, invade residences, kitchens in search of food. So you see them moving all over the community.

“Since 2015 there has never been a solution to the problem. All efforts have been made. Residents have gone to report to the district environmental health officer. He came here, we have seen the pig farmers, they promised us they were going to fence the animals but as we speak there are so many pigs running around freely.”

Mr Yakub warned the community is on the brink of a cholera outbreak if authorities fail to address their concerns.
