E/R section records accident-free Easter

Koforidua, April 15, GNA- The Eastern Region’s section of the Accra-Kumasi highway did not record any motor accident during this year’s Easter festivities.

The Eastern Regional Commander of the Motor Traffic and Transport Unit (MTTU) of the Ghana Police Service, Mr James K. Amoah, disclosed this in an interview with the Ghana News Agency (GNA) at Koforidua on Thursday.

He explained that, the cautiousness of drivers on the road during the Easter holidays might be to the highway patrols mounted by the Police during the period to check over-speeding, drunken drivers and the breaking of motor traffic regulations. Mr. Amoah said, the region in general, recorded 418 accidents from January to March ending this year, out of which 234 were minor ones.

He said 139 of the accidents were serious ones, which resulted in 45 deaths and 378 injuries.

During the same period, Mr Amoah said his office arrested 111 drivers for motor traffic offences, 103 were prosecuted and the rest convicted.

He said eight of the cases are still under investigations and fines totalling 32.3 million cedis were imposed on offenders by the law courts.
