Police must up game – Agbee

Personnel of the Ghana Police Service, especially in the Ashanti Region, must do better to combat crime following reported cases of robbery and attacks on people in the region, David Agbee, a security expert, has said.

According to him, the absence of a police guard at the residence of the judge whose residence was burgled at Kumasi over the weekend was unacceptable, hence police would need to take security more seriously in the region.

Thieves who broke into the house of the High Court judge on Saturday night bolted with mobile phones, a laptop bag, documents, and a sum of GHS700.

Police have granted bail to the security guard at the residence after he was invited to assist in investigations.

Commenting on this development in an interview with Emefa Apawu on the 505 programme on Class91.3FM Monday May 29, Mr Agbee said: “We need to put in preventive measures so that some of these things do not occur frequently.

“I think that the security situation, so far as this country is concerned, specifically in the Ashanti Region that this incident has actually occurred, what the police need to do is to ensure that they strengthen the way they operate within Kumasi and its environs.

“A judge is not an ordinary person and so one would have expected that the police would be able to assign somebody who will be more responsible in terms of making sure that they protect the judge and his environs.”

He added: “It is quite unfortunate that this incident has occurred, but in a society we should be able to appreciate the fact that we have deviants and all kinds of criminals in the society and so preventive measures need to be put in place so that some of these things do not occur as it has actually happened.”
