Workers of Tema Port protest over poor working conditions

Workers undertaking the Tema Port expansion project on behalf of Chinese Harbour Engineering Company (CHEC) in Tema have embarked on an industrial action to demand for better conditions of service.

Clad in red head and hand bands, the workers who were burning with fury, converged in front of the construction site of the Tema Harbour expansion project and chanted their demands through singing and drumming.

They also demanded the sacking of L’aine Services Ltd., the Human Resource subcontractor in charge of their salary and welfare.

According to the workers, CHEC pays L’aine Services Ltd. well but they on the other hand reduce the amount drastically when paying the workers.

The workers argued that they were maltreated and humiliated at the slightest provocation at the hands of their Chinese employers.

They also complained about discrimination between them and their Chinese counterparts.

The angry workers vowed not to return to work until their demands are met.
