Police shooting: Family of deceased to sue police

The family of a 30-year-old man who was shot and killed by the Police at Tema New Town in the early hours of last week Tuesday has served notice it is proceeding to court to seek justice.

According to the family, a suit will be served to the Police Administration latest by Thursday.

Patrick Mensah, was fired at by some members of the Police Patrol Team who were responding to a distress call in the area at about 1:30 am.

The Public Relations Officer of the Tema Regional Police Command, ASP Mr. Joseph Benefo Darkwa in an interview said the police received a distress call from someone (name withheld) who claimed he was being attacked.

According to him, the complainant told the Police Patrol Team that he had parked his car to buy something but returned to find a stranger in the driving seat.

ASP Benefo Darkwa said, the complainant added that in an attempt to question the stranger, a scuffle ensued and the suspect was joined by another person in the car.He said the car owner seeing that the guys would overpower him called in the police.

The suspects, according to ASP Benefo Darkwa upon seeing the police fled but were pursued by the policemen who later arrested the deceased.

He disclosed that in an attempt to handcuff the deceased, the latter allegedly snatched the gun of the policeman and in the process of taking the rifle back, the other policeman who was with the team shot the deceased.

An autopsy report on the deceased said he died of Haemorrhagic shock, severe neck and chest injury and gun shot at close range.

Speaking to Kasapa News, the Family Spokesperson, Mr William Attippoe said the family welcomes the autopsy report and will proceed to court since the deceased was killed unlawfully as he did no wrong.

“We are going to court on the charges of defamation, manslaughter and also seek compensation. Those police officers in question should be questioned and dealt with. The police should also constitute a disciplinary committee to look into the matter and ensure justice.”
