Boy loses leg week after it was hacked off by grandpa

A 48-year-old farmer has been arrested for hacking his grandson for attempting to steal at Nyamebekyere, a farming community near Enchi in the Western Region.

The accused, Asubire Azure, also known as Baba Alhassan, a Mossi, was said to have returned home from town and accused the boy, Michael Atanga, 13, of trying to go through his ceiling to steal some undisclosed items in his room.

Police source told Skyy Power FM that Baba Alhassan allegedly beat the victim mercilessly and inflicted deep cutlass wounds on his right leg.

He then locked him up in the room for about a week until some neighbours got wind of the boy’s predicament and arrested the grandfather and handed him over to the police on May 1, 2017.

The victim was admitted at the Enchi Government Hospital on Monday, but the leg had rotten to the extent that it was amputated on Wednesday May 3, 2017.

The grandfather has been charged with causing harm and he is being processed for court, Superintendent Raymond Kofi Erzuah, the Enchi District Police Commander has confirmed.
