Accra, March 26, GNA – Mrs Justice Joyce Bamford-Addo, a Supreme Court Judge, on Friday officially informed the Government of her intention to retire from the Judiciary after 41 years in public service.
She announced this when she paid a courtesy call on President John Agyekum Kufuor at the Castle, Osu.
Mrs Justice Bamford-Addo, who was called to the Bar in the same year with President Kufuor in Britain in 1961, began her service in Ghana in 1963.
President Kufuor commended her distinguished service to Ghana during which she attained very respectable and enviable position on the Supreme Court.
He urged Mrs Justice Bamford-Addo to put her talent and public spiritedness to good use for Ghana even during her retirement. Mr Emmanuel A. Owusu-Ansah, Judicial Secretary told the Ghana News Agency (GNA) in a telephone interview that Mrs Justice Bamford-Addo had not attained the compulsory retiring age for Justices of the Superior Courts of Judicature.
He said his Office had not been officially informed but quickly added that since she was going on voluntary retirement she might have found it appropriate to inform the President before submitting her letter to the Judicial Council.
