Two jailed in Takoradi for stowaway

A Takoradi District Court presided over by Her Worship, Madam Angela Atachie has sentenced two persons who attempted to stowaway.

Two others were also cautioned by the court over a similar act Thursday. The accused persons; Isaac Ekuban, popularly known as ‘Ballack’, 26, Isaac Quainoo, also called ‘Rider’, 30, Charles Anarquah,26, and Benjamin Assifuah, 26, were charged with conspiracy to commit crime and attempt to stowaway.

Stating the facts of the case, the prosecuting officer ASP Isaac Mensah Appenteng of the Marine Police said the four accused persons who are residents of New Takoradi and Nkotompo on Monday, April 24, 2017, at about 1.30 pm were together at Nkotompo and saw MV Monemvasia, a foreign cargo vessel berthed at the anchorage of the port of Takoradi.

They then assembled at Poasi New Takoradi with their food, water and other materials on Tuesday April 25, 2017 at about 2.15am and tried to stowaway.

However they were spotted by the sailors on board whilst climbing the vessel. The sailors alerted Port Signals who also alerted the Port Sea Patrol team who arrested them and handed them over to the Marine Police unit in Takoradi, where investigations were carried out leading to the charges in court.

Isaac Ekuban who jumped bail on a similar charge with two others who are at large was sentenced for 50 penalty units amounting to GHC600 or in default face 8 weeks imprisonment.

Isaac Quainoo was sentenced to a year imprisonment as this is his third attempt.

The 3rd and 4th accused, Charles Anarquah and Benjamin Assifuah, were cautioned and discharged.
