Sports Festival at Cape Coast

The 10th Annual Central Regional Basic Schools Sports Festival has opened at Cape Coast. Over one thousand athlets from the 12 Districts of the Region are taking part in the one week festival. The participants will compete in table tennis, netball, volley ball and athletics. In an address read for him, the Central Regional Minister urged the District Directors of Education in the Region to work out a scheme with the District Assembly to mobilise funds to support sporting activities. He also urged the Regional Directorate of Education to work around the clock to improve the poor performance of the Region at the 1994 and 1996 National Basic Schools Sports festival at this year’s festival in Koforidua in August. the Cape Coast Municipal chief Executive Madam Victoria Bonney decried the poor officiating and the fielding of overaged athletes at such competitions and called for an end to such practices. In the opening football match, Cape Coast District beat Dunkwa-On-Offin by three goals to one. In Netball Assin Fosu beat Adjumako five goals to one. While Upper Denkyira beat Asikuma by two straight games in the girls Volley ball match with Swedru defeating Twifo Praso two straight games in the boys volley ball match.
