Charlotte Osei unfit for Chatham House Award – AFAG

The Alliance for Accountable Governance (AFAG) has described chairperson of Ghana’s Electoral Commission, Mrs. Charlotte Osei as unfit and undeserving for an award from the Chatham House which she has been shortlisted for.

Addressing the press at a conference in Accra Tuesday, the group said, Mrs. Osei, since her appointment as the EC Boss, acted with impunity on several occasions and blatantly disregarded the Supreme Court rulings against her outfit going into the 2016 general elections.

“She was on the wrong side of all significant court litigation prior to the election, including those she initiated {such as the correct interpretation of the Supreme Court ruling on ridding the voter roll of ineligible persons, grounds for disqualifying presidential aspirants},” the group said.

Mrs Osei was earlier this month announced by Chatham House as one of three shortlisted personalities for the prestigious prize to be awarded by the Royal Institute of International Affairs of the U.K.

According to the Chatham House, Mrs. Osei’s nomination was based on her admirable supervision of Ghana’s peaceful and transparent electoral process in December 2016.

But AFAG thinks otherwise.

The pressure group believes Mrs Osei “fought and misrepresented many meaningful suggestions towards the peaceful elections, which caused major embarrassment for her outfit”.

In a petition to the Royal Institute of International Affairs, AFAG said Mrs. Charlotte Osei’s short stay at the helm of the Electoral Commission is unimpressive.

The group also accused the EC boss of bringing “disunity into the 7-member Commission which does not augur well for the well-being and image of the Commission”.

Mrs. Osei, according to the group, “may have announced historic presidential elections results on the 9th of December but the many issues surrounding her administration could have occasioned unfortunate and regrettable occurrences”.
