Kotoko Weigh Zito’s Future as Unbeaten Run Sparks Hope Ahead of FA Cup Final

Asante Kotoko’s management says it will make a final decision on the future of interim head coach Abdul Karim Zito at the end of the season, insisting the move will serve the best interests of the club and Ghanaian football.

Zito, originally appointed as Technical Director, was handed the reins as head coach following the dismissal of Dr. Prosper Ogum earlier this year. Since taking charge, the former Dreams FC coach has overseen an impressive resurgence. The Porcupine Warriors are now unbeaten in six matches across all competitions and have booked their place in the MTN FA Cup Final.

Despite a goalless draw over the weekend against Bibiani Gold Stars, leaving Kotoko five points adrift of league leaders Nations FC, the club’s Communications Director, Samuel Sarfo Duku, remains optimistic. However, he stopped short of confirming whether Zito will stay on as head coach beyond this season.

“At the end of the season, we will do a proper assessment of their performance within this short period and take a decision that will be in the best interest of Kotoko and Ghana football,” Sarfo Duku told reporters after the draw in Bibiani.

Duku also criticised the match officiating during the weekend fixture, though he did not go into specific details. “Some decisions left much to be desired,” he said, visibly frustrated.

For now, all eyes are on June 15, when Kotoko will take on Access Bank Division One side Golden Kick in the MTN FA Cup Final at the University of Ghana Stadium. Victory would offer a silver lining to what has been a turbulent campaign, and could strengthen Zito’s case for staying on.

Whether Zito remains or not, his short spell has already brought back belief among Kotoko fans, many of whom see the veteran coach as the steady hand needed to rebuild the club’s domestic dominance.
