Gomoa Assembly petitions RCC over disputed land

Apam (C/R), March 21, GNA – The first ordinary session of the Gomoa Assembly for the year at Apam was adjourned half way through on Thursday to enable the members to present a resolution to the Central Regional Co-ordinating Council (RCC) at Cape Coast.

This followed the announcement that the Awutu-Effutu-Senya District Assembly was developing a portion of land, which was the subject matter of a dispute with Gomoa and which was before the court of appeal, into an assembly hall complex.

The situation was so tense that the Presiding Member could not control the members and therefore had to adjourn the sitting to next week Wednesday.

Facts available at the assembly indicated that when the Gomoa District was carved out of the then Gomoa-Awutu-Effutu-Senya District the Legislative Instrument (LI) placed part of the Gomoa land around Winneba Junction under Awutu-Effutu-Senya District.

The people of Gomoa protested and the Central Regional Administration took direct control over the disputed land. It later formed a joint committee of the two assemblies to see to administer the lorry park at the Winneba Junction. Revenue from the area was sent to the RCC, which in turn shared it between the two assemblies.

Mr Frank Essel Cobbah, Presiding Member, led the assembly members who wore red armbands and headgear presented the resolution to Mr Ishaque Essilfie, Special Assistant to the Regional Minister. The resolution called on the RCC to take immediate action to stop the Awutu-Effutu-Senya District Assembly from developing the disputed land until the case pending before the court was disposed of. It also called on the RCC to find an amicable solution to boundary dispute between Gomoa and Agona.
