Kojo Oppong Nkrumah, Deputy Minister of Information, has said the Akufo-Addo-led government dealt with issues surrounding the activities of members of the Delta Force, a private security arm within the party, aptly.
According to him, despite recognising that members of the vigilante group were affiliated to the party, government has allowed the law to take its course after the heavily built men allegedly assaulted the Ashanti Regional Security Coordinator, George Agyei.
He added that unlike the previous administration that shielded party supporters who violated the country’s laws, Mr Akufo-Addo has ensured that persons who break the law are brought to book irrespective of political affiliation.
Mr Nkrumah’s pronouncements follow claims by the Member of Parliament for North Tongu, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa that the achievements of the last 100 days in office of the NPP administration cannot be mentioned without the brutalities meted out to innocent Ghanaians by the vigilante groups aligned to the governing NPP.
Mr Ablakwa told Chief Jerry Forson, host of Ghana Yensom, on Accra100.5FM on Tuesday April 18: “Any achievements of the NPP government cannot be without the reign of terror the Invincible [Forces] and Delta Force are unleashing on Ghanaians.
“They have brutalised people at the Flagstaff House. Apart from the Flagstaff House, they went to the Ashanti Regional Security Secretariat to brutalise the security coordinator and also attack a court.
“To the extent that the UN has cautioned a sitting president on such attacks, we cannot mention their achievements without the activities of these groups.”
But also speaking with Chief Jerry Forson on the same show, Mr Oppong Nkrumah said: “Admittedly, some members of our party have engaged in violence but the government has allowed the laws to be applied and to deal with them.
“We will not say because they belong to our party the law should not be applied. President Akufo-Addo did not behave like a former president did when his ministers signed a petition for him to release some members of his party who were incarcerated for scandalising the highest court of the land.”
