Catholic Bishops commend IGP, Interior Minister after Delta Force response

The Ghana Catholic Bishops’ Conference has condemned last Thursday’s attack of the KMA Circuit Court by political vigilante group Delta Force.

The group defied a judge’s order and set some of their members standing trial free, destroying property in the process.

But in a statement issued on Monday, April 10, the Catholic bishops expressed dismay at “the disregard for the rule of law exhibited” by Delta Force, which is affiliated to the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP).

“We, the Catholic Bishops, hereby condemn in no uncertain terms the incident of raiding the said court and will call on all and sundry to do same,” the statement signed by Most Rev Phillip Naameh, President of the Conference, said.

It said such acts only discredits the “hard-won” democratic credentials of the country. But they commended the Inspector General of Police, David Asante-Appeatu, and the Minister of Interior, Ambrose Dery, “for their prompt response to the Kumasi incident”.

“We equally acknowledge their commitment to deal with any person or group that breaks the law irrespective of their political affiliation and urge them not to relent in their efforts to bring the perpetrators to book.

“This, we believe, will serve as a deterrent to the public and send a clear signal to such other ‘vigilante groups’ who believe they can act with impunity and vicious disrespect for legitimate authority,” the statement added.

Already, the IGP has declared war on Delta Force and assured all of maximum security at the country’s courts. The Catholic bishops asked Ghanaians to be law-abiding and not take the peace in the country for granted.
